It was hard to narrow this down to just 10 songs. It sounded like simple task at first: pick ten songs that I like and write a few words about them. But as I began looking through all of the shows that Austin Music Weekly has recorded, I realized just how many of them are special to me in one way or another. I was at most of these shows, and listening through them brings back lots of good memories.
I remember Eagle Eye Williamson blazing through his solo set at Club de Ville during Free Week 2011, selling records out of a suitcase. I remember a shirtless Jonathan Terrell sweating out Not in the Face's nasty blues to an enthusiastic crowd at Beerland on a random Wednesday. I remember Dax Riggs equaling the weirdness of his lyrics by repeating the phrase "Love each other" over and over between songs at Emo's right before Halloween this year. And I remember White Denim setting the bar really high for any band that would appear at SXSW 2011, when they flawlessly jammed the night away with new guitarist Austin Jenkins at The Ghost Room.
I also found a couple of live cuts from Christian Bland and Shapes Have Fangs, both of whom have helped shape the local psych scene that I enjoy so much. There is also a golden indie oldie from Tacks, the Boy Disaster and some fun stuff from The Ugly Beats and The Octopus Project.
- Eagle Eye Williamson @ Club de Ville: "Comanche Peak"
- Christian Bland and the Revelators @ Mohawk: "Sounds Like '69"
- Shapes Have Fangs @ Mohawk: "Comanche"
- Not in the Face @ Beerland: "Brass Tacks"
- Dax Riggs @ Emo's: "No One Will Be a Stranger"
- White Denim @ The Ghost Room: "Street Joy"
- Tacks, the Boy Disaster @ Mohawk: "Frozen Feet"
- Cowboy and Indian @ Lamberts: "Leadbellies (Hurt My Pride)"
- The Ugly Beats @ Mohawk: "MOTOR!"
- The Octopus Project @ Emo's: "Truck"
