Palm Door

Marmalakes @ Palm Door on Dec 13, 2011

Rarely does an acoustic guitar get treated like a percussion instrument, but Marmalakes' frontman Chase Weinacht plays his with a force that changes the six string's sound altogether. That's evident on the jazzy rhythmic outbursts "Vittoria" and "Geneva Hall," two songs that show off the young trio's instrumental chops while throwing a nod to their folk pop roots. Playing the Austin Chronicle's Paper Cuts series, the band brought new life to November's Even Clothed EP.

The Tiny Adventurers @ Palm Door on Nov 29, 2011

Second shifting off the Li'l Cap'n Travis ship that keeps rolling on, singer/guitarist Matt Kinsey keyboardist Jeff Johnston and bassist Gary Newcomb teamed with ex-Mittens drummer Carrie Contey form The Tiny Adventurers, a quartet more steeped in Laurel Canyon esteem than the Capn's alt.country ways. The quartet released a windswept dandy in this fall's Wild-Eyed in the Hinterlands, a fourteen-song throwback to 1970s AM radio.

Mike and the Moonpies @ Palm Door on Oct 25, 2011

Forget that polished sound, Mike Harmeier's about grit. "Feed me on cornbread and beans," he sings on the Moonpies' redux of the classic "Goin' Down That Road Feeling Bad." "I ain't a-gonna be treated this way." Decked across the board in cowboy hats and pearl-snaps, the five-piece Moonpies brought some red dirt honky tonk to The Austin Chronicle's Paper Cuts series, invoking the spirits of old Austin while keeping that modern edge. Welcome to The Real Country.

Black Pistol Fire @ Palm Door on Sep 20, 2011

Two-man bands have a way of changing things up at the drop of a hat, running a tangent on a riff and turning it into an entirely different song. So it was no surprise when, performing at The Austin Chronicle’s Paper Cuts series, Black Pistol Fire flipped the Rubber Factory fury of "Cold Sun" into a bluesy "I Shot The Sheriff," or when Buddy Holly's "Well Alright" broke down into the mucked-up "Jezebel Stomp." Switches like that just come with the territory.

The Sour Notes @ Palm Door on Aug 16, 2011

Few bands step into the limelight like The Sour Notes. The power pop workaholics - kind enough to bless us this summer with fourth LP Last Looks - got the invite to play The Austin Chronicle's Paper Cuts series at the Palm Door and took unheralded advantage, tapping members of pop orchestra Mother Falcon for a celebratory showcase of Jared Boulanger's most recent work; proof positive that this quintet knows how to carry out their "Big Dreams."

Suzanna Choffel @ Palm Door on Jul 19, 2011

Suzanna Choffel has always been somewhat of a musical chameleon. The sultry songwriter has a voice built for low-speed scat jazz, but her fun-loving disposition and Austin roots have always brought out a bit more of a party. That was no more evident than at The Palm Door midway through July, when Choffel, bassist Johnny Vogelsang and drummer Kyle Thompson lit up The Austin Chronicle's Paper Cuts series with a twelve-song set that started high, swept through the coffee shop scene, and closed with a bang.

Foot Patrol @ Palm Door on May 28, 2011

“Footography.” “Dirty Digits.” “Foot Slave.” “Funyun Bunyuns.” Foot Patrol's TJ Wade and Hung Nguyen don’t just dig on feet; they’ve downright got a fetish. Fittingly, they set that obsession to a funk stankier than a bowling alley’s shoe rack. Performing at the Austin Chronicle’s inaugural Paper Cuts show, the party boy sextet made it known that the best dancing shoes are always open-toed. “Your golden arches are so delightful. Just give me one chance, a little mouthful.” Take a whiff of the Foot Patrol.
